Fauvist Manel Anoro captures the vibrant and dynamic coastal vistas of his native Catalunya in this collection of landscapes. He has long been enamored of the wild natural beauty of Spain's Balearic islands, particularly Menorca and Mallorca. Located in the West Mediterranean Sea, the islands have played an important role in history. Because of their geographical location, they have been a strategic vantage point for many civilizations including Carthaginians, Romans, Greeks, Moors, English, French, and Spanish.

Once one of the most naturally beautiful islands on earth, Mallorca gradually succumbed the tourism industry's push for development, and consequently, much of the island's rugged, raw beauty was lost. Though he still paints Mallorca's scenery, Anoro much prefers Menorca, whose natural scenery largely escaped tourist development. Anoro's desire to paint the real landscape with a different eye,î led him to abandon his signature palette grounded in bold reds, oranges and yellows, for a slightly pastel, cooler, palette. Two to three charcoal drawings created onsite, also accompany many of the paintings in this series. Anoro attributes the predominance of white strokes in the finished paintings to the charcoal drawings from which he worked. With elements as simple as viscous paint on canvas, Anoro immortalizes a laid-back Mediterranean island lifestyle, the heart of which remains the inhabitants' relationship to nature.
